Key Stage 1 and 2: Ages 5-11 years

The Primary Years are a time of rapid growth, curiosity and discovery. At Queen’s Qatar, we follow the National Curriculum for England through an engaging, enquiry-led approach that helps children become confident, independent and enthusiastic learners.

Through Learning Means the World, pupils explore global themes and make meaningful connections between subjects and the world around them. Strong teaching, supportive relationships and high expectations help children develop secure knowledge, curiosity, resilience and a genuine love of learning.

Learning Means the World brings subjects together through the themes of culture, communication, conflict and conservation, helping pupils make meaningful connections across their learning.

READING, WRITING, VOCABULARY & ORACY

Reading is at the heart of our curriculum. Pupils explore high-quality texts and whole-class novels, develop comprehension through VIPERS and visit the library each week.

Talk for Writing supports confident, purposeful writing, while Speak & Grow® systematically develops ambitious vocabulary and spoken language. Pupils rehearse, discuss and apply new words so that richer language becomes part of both their speech and writing.

MATHEMATICS, SCIENCE & STEM

White Rose Maths develops fluency, reasoning and problem-solving, while White Rose Science supports secure scientific knowledge and practical investigation.

Weekly STEM learning gives every Primary pupil opportunities to design, create, investigate and solve problems.

LANGUAGES & CULTURAL LEARNING

Arabic is taught to both native and non-native speakers, alongside Islamic Studies and Qatar History.

French begins in Year 1. From Year 3, pupils choose French or Spanish and receive two modern foreign language lessons each week.

SPECIALIST & CREATIVE LEARNING

All pupils from Year 1 to Year 6 receive weekly specialist Music teaching. Art and Design, Computing, Design and Technology and the wider curriculum provide regular opportunities for creativity, practical learning and problem-solving.

ACTIVE & HEALTHY

Every child from Year 1 to Year 6 takes part in weekly Physical Education and weekly swimming, developing physical confidence, teamwork, resilience and healthy habits.

LEARNING BEYOND THE CLASSROOM

Learning extends well beyond the classroom.

Pupils take part in at least one educational visit each term, alongside regular visitors and practical experiences that bring learning to life.

Our Learning Kitchen, science laboratories, library, sports facilities and specialist spaces give children opportunities to learn in different ways.

Teacher-led co-curricular activities run three times each week, while additional Artemex activities include swimming, sports, gymnastics, music, financial literacy and languages.

PUPIL VOICE & LEADERSHIP

We want children to know that their ideas matter.

The School Council gives pupils a voice in school life, while Year 6 pupils can take on additional responsibility as House Captains. Leadership, teamwork and responsibility are also developed through classroom roles, assemblies, events and wider school opportunities.

ASSESSMENT & SUPPORT

Teachers use ongoing assessment, regular progress reviews and standardised assessments including NGRT, PTE and PTM to understand each child’s attainment and identify appropriate next steps.

Adaptive teaching is embedded across Primary, with targeted interventions introduced where additional support is needed.

Our wider provision includes EAL support, AEN leadership and teaching support and a school counsellor. Zones of Regulation supports emotional awareness and self-regulation, while clear and consistent expectations help create calm, positive learning environments.

Above all, strong relationships ensure that every child is known, valued, challenged and supported.
